Sterk WK-debuut in Portimão voor Track & Trades Wixx Racing Team
Het Track & Trades Wixx Racing Team heeft in Portimão zijn officiële debuut gemaakt in het FIM World Sportbike Championship. Op het Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, een circuit dat bekendstaat om zijn hoogteverschillen begon het team aan een nieuw hoofdstuk. Het werd een positief weekend waarin Ferre Fleerackers en Jeffrey Buis zich sterk hebben laten zien. Het hoogtepunt was de derde plaats van Ferre tijdens de allereerste race ooit in deze nieuwe klasse.
Vanaf de eerste meters op vrijdag liet het team direct zien dat het tempo aanwezig is. In de vrije trainingen wisten zowel Jeffrey als Ferre zich goed in de voorhoede te mengen, waarbij er stap voor stap werd gewerkt aan de afstelling van de Suzuki GSX-8R. De focus lag op het vinden van een stabiele basis, iets wat gedurende de dag duidelijk zichtbaar werd in de rondetijden.
Tijdens de kwalificatie, werd deze lijn doorgezet. Ferre wist zich knap op de tweede plaats te kwalificeren en liet daarmee direct zien dat hij zich thuis voelt op het wereldtoneel. Jeffrey zat daar niet ver achter en noteerde een sterke vijfde startpositie, waarmee het Nederlandse team vanaf de eerste twee startrijen mocht vertrekken.
De eerste race van het weekend zorgde voor gezonde spanning bij de rijders en het team. Want het moment was aangebroken, het debuut in het WK. Na een spannende wedstrijd, die werd onderbroken door een rode vlag, volgde een herstart over vijf ronden. In die sprint lieten beide coureurs zich continu vooraan zien en mengden zich nadrukkelijk in de strijd om het podium. Ferre scoorde een prachtige derde plaats tijdens zijn debuut, terwijl Jeffrey heel kort daarachter zat met een vierde plaats op enkele duizendsten van een seconde.
Tijdens de tweed race zagen we eveneens een spannende wedstrijd. Ferre kende een sterke race en reed meerdere malen aan de leiding. Jeffrey daarentegen kende een iets lastigere openingsfase. Naarmate de race volgde wist hij zijn ritme goed op te bouwen, wat resulteerde in een zesde plaats. Ferre kwam na een kleine fout in de slotfase als negende over de finish op slecht 1.427 van de winnaar, of te wel een spannende race.
“Het was een positief eerste weekend voor ons als team. We hebben laten zien dat we direct mee kunnen doen voorin en dat is belangrijk in zo’n debuut. In de races zat het tempo er goed in en konden we meestrijden om het podium. Natuurlijk wil je altijd meer, maar dit geeft vertrouwen, helemaal na de lastige test begin van de week. We weten waar we nog kunnen verbeteren en daar gaan we hard aan werken. Dank aan het team voor het werk dit weekend, op naar Assen.”
“We mogen tevreden zijn met het weekend in Portimão. Het team heeft ontzettend hard gewerkt om een sterk pakket neer te zetten en dat is gelukt. Iedere sessie stonden we er goed bij en zo ook in de races. Om tijdens mijn debuut in het wereldkampioenschap direct mijn eerste podium te scoren is natuurlijk geweldig. De tweede race was net iets minder door een foutje in de slotfase, anders had er zeker meer ingezeten. Verder ben ik blij met deze resultaten, op naar de volgende race.”
“Ons debuut in het World Sportbike-kampioenschap zit erop en we kunnen positief terugkijken op het weekend in Portugal. Ondanks de nodige uitdagingen in de voorbereiding heeft het team sterk werk geleverd. Beide rijders waren het hele weekend voorin te vinden. Met een derde plaats voor Ferre en een vierde plaats voor Jeffrey in de eerste race zaten we dicht bij een dubbel podium. De tweede race leverde een zesde en negende plaats op. Het harde werk van de afgelopen maanden is beloond en dit geeft vertrouwen richting de volgende ronde.”
Na een veelbelovende start van het seizoen, werpt het Track & Trades Wixx Racing Team zijn blik alweer vooruit. Want aankomende woensdag zal het team alweer in Assen staan voor een test in voorbereiding op het World Superbike op hetzelfde circuit. Deze vindt plaats van vrijdag 17 tot en met zondag 19 april. Het team hoopt hier natuurlijk op support van de fans en sponsoren.
The Track & Trades Wixx Racing Team made its official debut in Portimão in the FIM World Sportbike Championship. At the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve the team began a new chapter. It turned into a positive weekend in which Ferre Fleerackers and Jeffrey Buis showed strong performance. The highlight was Ferre’s third place in the very first race ever held in this new class.
From the very first laps on Friday, the team immediately demonstrated that the pace was there. During free practice, both Jeffrey and Ferre consistently ran at the front, while step by step working on the setup of the Suzuki GSX-8R. The focus was on finding a stable base, which became clearly visible in the lap times throughout the day.
This progress continued into qualifying. Ferre secured an impressive second place on the grid, immediately proving he feels at home on the world stage. Jeffrey was not far behind, setting a strong fifth fastest time, allowing the Dutch team to start from the front two rows.
The first race of the weekend brought tension for both riders and the team — the moment had arrived: their World Championship debut. After an exciting race, which was interrupted by a red flag, a five-lap sprint restart followed. In that sprint, both riders consistently fought at the front and were fully in the battle for the podium. Ferre secured an excellent third place on his debut, while Jeffrey finished just behind in fourth, separated by only a few thousandths of a second.
Race two delivered also excitment. Ferre had a strong race and led multiple laps. Jeffrey, on the other hand, experienced a slightly more difficult opening. As the race progressed, he managed to build his rhythm, resulting in a sixth-place finish. After a small mistake in the final phase, Ferre crossed the line in ninth, just 1.427 seconds behind the winner — underlining how competitive the race was.
“It was a positive first weekend for us as a team. We’ve shown that we can be competitive at the front straight away, and that’s important for a debut like this. The race pace was strong and we were able to fight for the podium. Of course, you always want more, but this gives confidence — especially after the difficult test at the beginning of the week. We know where we can improve, and we’ll work hard on that. Thanks to the team for all the effort this weekend — on to Assen.”
“We can be satisfied with the weekend in Portimão. The team worked incredibly hard to deliver a strong package, and that paid off. We were competitive in every session, including the races. To score my first podium in my World Championship debut is of course amazing. The second race was slightly less due to a small mistake at the end — otherwise, more could have been possible. Overall, I’m happy with these results. Looking forward to the next race.”
“Our debut in the World Sportbike Championship is complete, and we can look back positively on the weekend in Portugal. Despite the challenges in preparation, the team delivered strong work. Both riders were consistently at the front throughout the weekend. With a third place for Ferre and a fourth for Jeffrey in race one, we came close to a double podium. Race two resulted in a sixth and ninth place. The hard work over the past months has paid off, and this gives confidence heading into the next round.”
After a promising start to the season, the Track & Trades Wixx Racing Team is already looking ahead. This coming Wednesday, the team will be back on track in Assen for a test in preparation for the World Superbike event at the same circuit, taking place from Friday April 17 to Sunday April 19. The team is, of course, hoping for strong support from fans and partners.
