Emotional season finale in Jerez: podium for Ferre Fleerackers and farewell to Jeffrey Buis

The Track & Trades Wixx Racing Team concluded its debut season in the FIM World Sportbike Championship from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 October at the Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto in Spain. It turned into a special and emotional weekend, highlighted by an impressive second-place finish for Ferre Fleerackers, but also an unfortunate crash for Jeffrey Buis before the race had even started. The incident was particularly heartbreaking, as the two-time World Champion has decided to retire from professional motorcycle racing at the end of this season.

Under hot conditions, the race weekend got underway on Friday with Free Practice. Both Jeffrey and Ferre completed solid opening sessions, working on improving the setup of their Suzuki GSX-8R machines. Temperatures increased significantly during Superpole, while a red flag interruption contributed to a hectic qualifying session. Fleerackers eventually secured ninth position on the grid, while Buis struggled to find a clear lap and had to settle for eighteenth.

Saturday's opening race brought contrasting fortunes for the two riders. For Jeffrey, things went wrong before the race had even started. The Dutch rider crashed during the warm-up lap under unfortunate circumstances and was unable to take part in the race. His weekend came to a premature end, as he was subsequently declared medically unfit to participate in Sunday's final race. Looking back, it is particularly sad that Buis had to bring his impressive racing career to an end in such circumstances. It was certainly not the farewell anyone within the team had wished for him.

Meanwhile, Ferre delivered an outstanding performance on Saturday. Starting from ninth on the grid, the young Belgian fought his way through the field and joined the battle for the podium. After an exciting race, he crossed the finish line in second position, securing another podium finish for the team in the World Championship.

Sunday marked the final race of the season. Unfortunately, Fleerackers experienced a difficult outing. A chaotic opening lap saw him caught up in several battles, and he also had to serve a long lap penalty following an incident during Saturday's race. Halfway through the race, the Belgian suffered an unfortunate crash, bringing his final outing of the season to an early end. Thankfully, he escaped without injury.

"It was a weekend of mixed emotions. Saturday was fantastic, and we managed to fight our way from ninth on the grid to the podium. Unfortunately, Sunday was much more difficult and ended with a crash. It's disappointing to finish the season this way, but I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved together as a team this year. A huge thank you to everyone for their hard work and support!"

"As a professional athlete, you often have to make important decisions quickly, but this is perhaps the most difficult decision of my career. Over the past few years, I've been able to do what I've dreamed of my entire life: racing motorcycles at World Championship level. Saying goodbye to that isn't easy, but I've thought about it very carefully. To continue progressing in the sport requires an enormous budget and, realistically, that is unfortunately not achievable for me. I want to be honest about that, both with myself and the people around me. I now live with my girlfriend in our own home, and that also changes the way you look at the future. Of course, it's difficult to stop racing, and I find it hard to find the right words. But above all, I look back with tremendous pride and satisfaction on an incredible time. For years, I've been able to do what I dreamed of as a child, win many races and become a two-time World Champion. Those are achievements I'm incredibly proud of and that nobody can ever take away from me. I fully realise how special that is. None of this would have been possible without the support of my family, girlfriend, friends, fans and all the sponsors who have supported me and believed in me throughout the years. I'm extremely grateful to everyone. A new chapter in my life is now beginning, but I look back with a wonderful feeling on everything I've been able to experience and achieve in motorcycle racing."

"It's incredibly disappointing to finish the season this way, especially after Ferre's fantastic second place on Saturday. Of course, it's also an emotional moment knowing that Jeffrey is retiring from racing. We're extremely grateful that he was part of our team this season. Together, we've achieved some incredible results, with the victory at Assen being one of the absolute highlights. Jeffrey has shown tremendous dedication throughout the year, and I personally want to thank him for everything he has done. We wish him all the happiness and success in whatever comes next. I also want to thank our entire team, sponsors and partners for their trust and commitment throughout this special first World Championship season."

The season finale in Jerez marks the end of a special chapter for the Track & Trades Wixx Racing Team. The Dutch-based squad made its debut in the FIM World Sportbike Championship this year and immediately proved its competitiveness on the world stage. With multiple victories and podium finishes, including an unforgettable home round at TT Circuit Assen, the team has more than lived up to its ambitions. Behind these achievements lies an intense season filled with hard work and important steps forward for the team. Looking back with pride on everything that has been accomplished, attention is already turning towards the future. Preparations for the upcoming season are well underway, and more news about next year will follow soon.
